12 terms buyers and operators use, each defined in plain words.
- UTV (side-by-side)
- A utility task vehicle with seats next to each other, a steering wheel and a roll cage. Often called a side-by-side or SxS, and the usual machine on dune buggy tours.
- ATV
- An all-terrain vehicle ridden astride with handlebars, usually called a quad. Riders steer with their body weight as well as the bars.
- Dune bashing
- Driving over and along sand dunes in a 4x4 or buggy, usually as part of a desert safari. Tyre pressures are lowered for grip on soft sand.
- Displacement (cc)
- The engine size in cubic centimetres. Operators use it to match machines to riders, with smaller engines for beginners and younger riders.
- PWC
- Personal watercraft, the formal term for a jet ski or similar sit-on craft driven by a water jet. Rules and licences for PWCs are set locally.
- Guided tour
- A ride led by a guide who sets the route, pace and stops. Most first-time riders book a guided tour.
- Self-drive
- Hiring a machine to ride without a guide, within set areas or trails. It usually needs a valid licence and some experience.
- Waiver
- A form the rider signs before the activity, confirming they understand the risks and the rules. Many operators let riders sign it online before they arrive.
- Safety briefing
- The talk and short practice before a ride covering controls, hand signals, spacing and what to do if something goes wrong.
- Trail grade
- A rating of how hard a trail or route is, from easy to expert. It helps riders pick a tour that matches their experience.
- Two-up
- Riding with a passenger on the same machine. Some tours offer two-up seats for riders who would rather not drive.
- Dealer demo
- A test ride on a dealer’s machine before buying, often at a demo day or on the dealer’s own track.
